John Collins Reports...
Progress on re-assembling the Clubman has been rapid recently. So much so we're almost ready to put the engine back in. Over the weeks, new master cylinders went on, handbrake and cables, wiper motor, front lights, indicator stalk, etc. One of the problems with rebuilding a pristine shell is that you can't refit grubby old components on it. Almost every bracket has been cleaned, rubbed down and sprayed - from big bits like the fan shroud to seat brackets and even the tiny little plates that holds the handbrake cables, even the bolts were tarted up (Hylomar aluminum paint, try it, works wonders).
I went off to Southern Mini Days one Sunday and bought a pair of black / silver number plates at £20 the pair. Importantly, these have the proper style of lettering - some companies I spoke to would only do aluminum plates with the modern, condensed typeface, and it looks awful.
When I got back home, I found that my father had sorted all the electrics, I don't do Auto electrics - they're his domain, but with a new battery fitted, everything lit up, quite lucky really although there isn't much wiring on a Mini this old. He's also fashioned a new bracket for the heated screen switch, but I'll be painting it black to tone it down.
The front seats were extracted from the loft, but were filthy, we thought they'd need proper upholstery cleaner, but no, household cream cleaner did a perfect job on them (see photo). They're now in the car, although the interior is last on my list of things to do.....John.
