Mortie the 66 Cooper + Boris........By Maddy
Mortie has had a few little tweaks over the holiday period. (1) Dynamo, have replaced this with another unit as the brushes in the old Dynamo were badly worn. (2) Rear brake shoes have been replaced and the rear wheels have been thoroughly cleaned - look very smart now (3) On the cards - New pads for the front disc brakes and some minor paint touch up on the bodywork.
I'm pleased to say that Boris is operational and back on the road again. The problem with Boris's brakes was finally traced back to the master cylinder. Gavin ordered a replacement but unluckily it was not suitable. The reason! turns out that Boris was one of the few minis which were fitted with a diagonal braking system. British Leyland produced minis with this system for about a year. As the master cylinder was totally obsolete the hunt was on for a new seal kit, eventually Gavin managed to find one and rebuilt the master cylinder. With that done the brakes were re-bled and the car put in for another MOT. So today (09/01/2008) I'm back behind the wheel. Its amazing how the body adapts to different control systems, after driving the cooper for nearly three weeks I'd gotten used to its controls, But this morning when I drove Boris and used the indicators the wipers came on, then I couldn't get it to reverse gear until I remembered that you had to lift the shift stick and then slam it across. Never mind I'll be all right by going home time.
Boris threw a slight wobbly Last Thursday - on the very last turn into my road the indicators packed up. The MOT examiner had remarked " Flasher is close to the minimum rate" I swapped out the hazard unit and used that instead, then hotfooted down to Gavin at GTR motors. He didn't have one in stock so he got straight onto his supplier and ordered a new one for me. This arrived Friday and I picked it up that evening, 30 seconds later it was installed and the hazard unit returned to its rightful place. Now that's what I call service. And now a nice little surprise! I stopped for petrol at my local garage and the attendant handed me a £10 note, puzzling until she explained " You accidentally handed me 2 notes when you paid for your petrol the other night". Turns out the notes had stuck together as they were brand new out of the ATM. And that's what I call service#2....Maddy
