Ongoing Sub-frame report #2

Saturday 19th May - Alan came over with his welding kit to fit the rear bulkhead sub-frame repair panels. First he had to cut out the rotten mounting points until good metal was found. Maddy had crawled under the car Friday evening and had measured the distance between sub-frame trunnion mounting centres and committed these to paper. The centre line of the car was established and this was used as the main datum point. Now that Alan had the measurements he was able to position the panels which he temporarily fixed with self tapping screws. The measurements were checked and once verified the welding began. Welding went quite smoothly until the alarm was raised - FIRE. Cris had forgotten about an umbrella which was laying on the floor in the car which promptly went up in flames. This minor fire was soon extinguished and work continued. As Alan was busy with the welding Maddy and Cris set about changing a rear brake backplate due to a completely seized brake adjuster, so bad that the square section had broken off. Luckily, the backplate on the old sub-frame was serviceable and the brake adjuster was free. This was soon fitted in place. All of the welding was completed around 5 O'clock and it was time to call it a good days work done.

Sunday 20th May - Cris came back today so that the sub-frame could be offered up to the bodywork. Before this could be done the repairs had to be painted and allowed to dry. Whilst the paint was drying Cris and Maddy fitted the rubber cones and a new main brake pipe under the car, and only because Cris had broken the pipe last week. What a job that was - much cussing and bruised knuckles. With the paint now dry the sub-frame was positioned under the car and slowly jacked up into position. Maddy's measurements and Alan's welding were spot on and the bolts slid easily into their respective positions. Next the shock absorbers were fitted. All that is left to do on Tuesday is to re-fit the exhaust pipe, hand-brake cables, fit the rear wheels and lower the car to the ground and finish off by adjusting and bleeding the rear brakes plus connecting the battery. Many thank's to Alan for welding in the repair panels.
